Steel Altar

FOR soprano, MEZZO-SOPRANO, tenor, baritone, and piano
2016

This piece was performed for the CU NOW Composer Fellows' Initiative at the University of Colorado - Boulder.

This scene addresses narratives that are close to my heart. It seems in some ways, I am always trying to help our culture better understand what we deem "abnormal." As for this scene, it's family therapy at the mental hospital, and Sara's parents want to know how to help her. Meanwhile, Sara's truth gets snagged in her throat. This scene is an attempt to depict the fear that precedes honesty, the pain of discovering someone you love isn't who you thought they were, and the wisdom that is gained when we honor our darkness.
